  1. Tribute statue in town of North Hempstead Long Island. “Sand Miners Monument. Glaciers left behind mounds of glacial sand originating 20,000 years ago. Since the 1880’s it has been estimated that over 140,000,000 yards of sand were shipped by barge from Port Washington to build the sidewalks and buildings of New Yrok City. The immigrants that did this back breaking work were from Sardinia, Italy, Germany, Poland, Ireland and Scandinavia. Them was heroes too.
