I am not making fun or the derelict men in this sketch. There was once a “bum of the month” at an old bar, owned by a Mr. Fuchs, in the Bowery, that once a month gave contributions to buy a new suit for one selected bum. The hat was passed and a collection taken up for him. Also, Somewhere I heard or read that a N.Y.P.D. cop
referred to one section of the Pennsylvania station that had so many derelicts laying around the “Upper Sleeping Lounge”
As in “I’m going to patrol over at the Upper Sleeping Lounge” I had the occasion to walk through the station recently at 5:00 in the morning. It was very surrealistic.
